F.A.Q.s for Prospective Graduate Students
How can I meet other graduate students on campus?
A great place to start is to contact the representative to the Association for Graduate Students (AGS) from the department to which you are applying for admission. The department can give you this student's name and contact information. The AGS is active in sponsoring educational and social events, providing grants for research and travel, supporting graduate clubs and organizations, and co-hosting the annual Graduate Recognition Ceremony. If you are coming from overseas, you may find many of good contacts through the
International Students Association.
How do I apply for teaching or research assistantships within the College of Engineering?
Few teaching assistantships are available in the College of Engineering. Research assistantships are dependent upon the availability of project funds acquired through the grant writing efforts of individual engineering faculty members and groups of faculty members. The college supports a large number of such assistantships each year. You typically need to communicate your interests and requests concerning assistantships through the specific engineering department to which you are applying. Each department typically has their own requirements on what information they would like to receive so please consult the individual department Web sites or contact the department to discover those requirements. Departments may also choose to nominate you for research assistantships available on a campus-wide competitive basis. Most departments will not make any firm financial commitments or nominate you further until they have on file a fully completed, verified and accepted graduate application. This ensures that all of your records are accurate and all department requirements have been met.
