Research interests
David Dvorak began teaching at University of Maine in 1988 after spending six years in research and development at GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati, Ohio. While at GE, Mr. Dvorak worked on aerothermo computer modeling and engine testing, primarily studying compressor instabilities. At the beginning of his teaching career at UM, Mr. Dvorak focused his research efforts on teaching and learning issues in engineering technology education, focusing especially on non-traditional students. Mr. Dvorak has since pursued technical interests in energy conservation and waste minimization through his involvement with the Industrial Assessment Center. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Maine and Ohio, and does consulting work in situations involving materials testing and/or accident investigation. Currently, Mr. Dvorak is working on an inter-disciplinary research team through the Laboratory for Surface Science and Technology (LASST) in the area of tribology (the study of friction, lubrication, and wear). He is currently developing a
nanotribometer
for making friction and wear measurements on a microscopic scale.
