Undergraduate Programs
Admissions
Preparation
Engineers solve problems by relying on their creative and academic skills. You should enjoy problem solving and be challenged by the effort it requires. While in high school you should take the following courses:
Mathematics |
Science |
Languages, Arts, & Social Sciences |
Algebra I & II (required)
Geometry (required)
Trigonometry (required)
Calculus (if available) |
Biology
Chemistry (required)
Physics (required)
Computer Programming or Applications |
English (4 units required)
Foreign Languages (2-3 units)
Social Studies (2 units required)
Fine Arts/Humanities (1-2 units) |
For engineering, advanced placement or honors level courses in high school are recommended. Combined SAT scores of 1110 and graduation in the top 20% of your high school class, with no grades less than a "B" should be your goal.
If you do not meet some of the above stated minimums, it may be possible to be admitted to the General Engineering (GEM) Program at the University of Maine in your first year in order to prepare you for a successful career in engineering..
How to Apply
To apply, simply fill out an Undergraduate Admission Application. For your intended major, choose from among any of the undergraduate engineering programs or simply state "Engineering" on the form if you wish to take some time to decide.
Additional information about admission to the University of Maine, can be obtained from the Admissions Office.
Undecided Engineering Program
If you think you want to be an engineer, but are not sure which field....no problem. In the Undecided Engineering program, you will start off with a series of courses that will count no matter which engineering program you ultimately choose. In addition, you will take a course in the first semester that, along with introducing you to college life, will give you an overview of all of the engineering and engineering technology programs we offer. As long as you are able to decide by the end of the first year, you will be able to progress towards the degree of your choice at a normal pace.
General Engineering (GEM) Program
Our first and foremost desire in the College of Engineering is to work in every way possible to ensure that our incoming students have the best possible opportunity to be successful in our programs. With that in mind, we have tracked the progress of incoming engineering students for many years. What has become evident is that students who have SAT's of 550 verbal & 560 quantitative, are in the top 20% of their graduating class, and do not have any high school grades of less than "B" are the most likely to carry a full academic load the first year and succeed in engineering. We have also found that students who do not meet the above stated minimums are much more likely to be successful in our programs only if they start their academic career with a slightly reduced academic load. With that in mind, we developed the General Engineering program.
As a General Engineering student, in the fall semester, you would be enrolled in "Introduction to General Engineering." In this course, you are assigned an upper-class student as a peer mentor. You are required to meet with your mentor in a small group setting a few times each week to enhance your study skills, develop study partners, and work in problem solving sessions.
Transfer Admission
All students who transfer to the College of Engineering from another institution must earn a minimum of 30 credit hours through the college to qualify for a B.S. degree from the University of Maine. Credits from military service schools do not transfer. Normally credits from associate degree programs may be used for elective credits only. Associate Degree level mathematics and science courses do not fulfill the requirements for the B.S. program. CLEP credit can be granted for the appropriate subject exams. Given these limitations, you will find that most courses with appropriate content, at appropriate levels, will transfer.
Transferring credits for comparable courses taken at other universities is relatively straightforward and easy. Degree credit will normally be allowed for courses in which grades of "C" or above have been received. Evaluation of such courses for approval of degree credit and possible equivalency rests with the Associate Dean of the College of Engineering. Simply fill out an application for admission to the University of Maine and enclose transcripts from the previous universities you have attended. These courses will automatically be considered for transfer to the College of Engineering. If you wish to have a specific course reconsidered after our initial evaluation, just give us a call and we will evaluate the course in question in greater detail.
